Glossy grey-blue paper covers featuring a black-and-white photograph of David Lean holding a Leica camera within a framed panel to the front cover, with the title in white serif type above and "AFI Souvenir Edition" at the foot. Mild shelf wear with light bumping and creasing along the corners and edges. A few light surface scratches to the glossy laminate of the back cover. Binding tight (staple bound). Pages clean and unmarked. Souvenir program issued for the 18th Annual American Film Institute Life Achievement Award dinner honoring British director Sir David Lean, held March 8, 1990 and broadcast on the ABC Television Network on April 19, 1990. Hosted by Gregory Peck and produced by George Stevens, Jr., the dinner gathered tributes from Steven Spielberg, Sophia Loren, Peter O'Toole, Omar Sharif, Julie Christie, Alec Guinness, Marsha Mason, and other Lean collaborators. The booklet opens with a history of the AFI Life Achievement Award listing all prior recipients from John Ford (1973) through Gregory Peck (1989), followed by a critical essay "The Achievement of David Lean" tracing his career from In Which We Serve through A Passage to India, a longer reflective piece "Who Are You?" on Lawrence of Arabia, and a generous gallery of B&W production photographs and rare on-set stills contributed by event sponsors including Pacific Theatres, Lucasfilm Ltd, Columbia Pictures, Turner Entertainment, and Fries Entertainment. Per the half-title, this limited edition was distributed only to AFI members participating in the 1991 nomination and membership renewal program, making it scarcer than the standard dinner program. David Lean died on April 16, 1991, less than a year after this tribute was held.
